Looks like London after the Blitz. All you need is unexploded ordinance sticking out of the sides of buildings.

The article is here, mainly focuses on the notorious Ghost Estate belt in the North Shannon Basin 300,000 units mentioned not Cuffes whitewash number.

Chris Donoghue on Newstalk this morning donned the Green Jersey and accused the London Indo of "Paddywhackery" with this picture/article.

IMO, if I had to come up with a single picture to describe the reason why we are in this terrible mess, it would be a ghost estate somewhere.

Please correct this article. The National Housing Development Survey published today, in a review across Ireland, found 33,000 homes are either complete and vacant of which 23,000 are nearly complete.

Property prices in Ireland have dropped below the cost to build & land. Virtually no houses have been built for the past two years and with the cost of building materials and energy rising there is going to be no further houses built for the forseeable future. Yes, some of the 33,000(note the correction from the 300,000 quoted in the dire article above) are built in places where there is not a need for housing, like Leitrim, but in any of the commuter towns and major cities there will be a housing shortage in the not to distant future as the economy progresses. Let's not forget part of the problems with Anglo etc is to do also with property outside of Ireland. So far 25% of all property loans transferred to NAMA is UK based property. €15 billion dollars of Anglo Irish Banks property loan book is in the US and subtantially large parts of the property loans are based across europe and the Middle East.

60% of all Ireland imports are from the UK. The UK's Tarde surplus with Ireland for 2010 is £6B at a time when the UK is heading toward a £40B trade deficit for 2010. Panic always brings out the doomsayers, no more so than in journalism.

The L-Indo has been doing amazing image-led front pages for some time now. Excellent.

Did anyone ever get a breakdown spreadsheet of the empties that were compiled in the recent ghost estate report?

If we had that, we could easily verify if any were "omitted"

(I'll volunteer to do carlow)

Mark Coleman in the linked BBC article wrote:
By a magnitude of 5% of GDP, Ireland has achieved more correction in its budget, in relative terms, than most EU countries put together.

Ugh. Is that even English? How can a comparison be "in relative terms" and compared to "most EU countries put together"?

Anyone feel like asking for the names/addresses of the development? It would at least be interesting to hear what excuse they have for not giving it. You could also indicate that the numbers are not credible if they cannot be checked.

I'm not sure when this became available - when I checked the announcment of the report yesterday on the Department of the Environment Heritage and Local Government, there was no link. However the Minister has now published maps of the ghost estates and the methodology used to survey empties - extract

"The survey includes 2,846 developments comprising

1. All incomplete housing developments containing two or more dwellings that had commenced by the time of the survey (which was conducted from May to September 2010); and
2. Any completed housing developments of two or more dwellings that were completed in the three years prior to the carrying out of the survey and where 10% or more of the dwellings in that development were vacant at the time of survey."

Can you spot any omissions?"

I opened up another thread having studied one of the maps which omitted over half the estates in one area. Although you mightn't have names of the estates, the location indicated by the red circle will probably be enough locally to identify the estate. This thread appears to be about the Indie story so that's why I created the other thread but mods, feel free to merge!
