Here we go again - another crucial referendum in Ireland. Taoiseach announces a public vote on the new EU fiscal compact treaty.

It will be interesting to see FFail rowing in behind the government for this; surely every populist bone in their bodies will be screaming at them to take the chance to oppose it?

You're about to witness a nation collectively shoot itself in the foot.

The compact only requires 12/17 countries to ratify it for it to become law ... So if we vote no, where does that leave us? Does it eventually force us out of the Euro or does it force a renegotiation of the compact I wonder?

Let the misrepresentation of the issues begin...

What are the chances that more than 5% of voters have a bog's notion of what they are voting on? And right now I include myself in the 95%. This is what representative democracy is supposed to be for.

The pictures from Greece give a good idea of what cutting the deficit overnight would look like. It may be the right thing to do, but I'm not sure there's the appetite for it.

On an unrelated note, I'm a little disappointed that this will effectively let Inky O'Snodaigh off the hook.

Well the whole concept of a 'bail-out' fits in very handsomely with their nautical fetish. See also 'berth certificate', 'citizenSHIP', the courtroom 'dock' and - my favourite - cries of 'man overboard' when the judge adjourns a session...
