I am surprised there is no mention of the 1.1m uk properties empty on 2011 census night.

Really? "We walked around. Maybe some places were empty. We asked some people but they don't know why."

Well that is effectively as much as the census enumerator can do. First I think this website is doing good general work on vacants, they have highlighted a number of vacant properties and tried to find out why they are not occupied, included social housing on maxwell road which was still unoccupied at least a few weeks ago.
http://www.dublininquirer.com/2016/05/2 ... well-road/

In this case rather than query or speculate or just forget the numbers, they have taken the numbers, gone out to the areas and tried to come up with some evidence, I think they provide good background on the census and also highlighted that a number of the vacants would be covered by Monday to Friday commuters. Also this is a small website publishing independent journalism and to be fair they seem to be doing more on this issue than many larger richer traditional newspapers.

Nice find, treasure trove of good journalism, just subscribed to the print edition.
This one cleared up my confusion about Land Registry and the Registry of Deeds.

Dublin numbers are in, 20,000 empties.
http://www.irishtimes.com/news/social-a ... -1.2909055

Quote:
More than 20,000 apartments and houses, excluding holiday homes, are vacant in Dublin city and suburbs, with nearly 9,000 of those in the city centre, according to this year’s census.
In addition, just in excess of 2,000 commercial properties are vacant, according to Dublin City Council, which gives a discount on rates on empty buildings.
