Tip of the iceberg - I expect....

http://www.rte.ie/news/2017/0211/851869 ... ion-louth/
A garda operation near the border in Co Louth targeting illegal immigration earlier this week has resulted in eight people being deported. The planned operation, conducted by the immigration unit at Dundalk Garda Station and assisted by the National Immigration Bureau, resulted in a number of detections. It is understood several different nationalities were involved and that they had made their way across the border having travelled from Britain to Northern Ireland.

Independent reports
Quote:
On average, a man who approaches one of the gangs so that he can marry an EU national to exploit Ireland’s asylum and immigration system “has to pay at least €15,000 for the wedding to be facilitated”.
The mobsters then use their criminal contacts in continental Europe to send a ‘bride’ to Ireland to marry the asylum-seeker in a registry office, with the women generally being paid about €3,000 and spending on average only three days in the country. The ‘bride and groom’ would also be given assistance in completing the paperwork required for the man to be granted EU rights. http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/ma ... 75740.html

A major Garda probe is under way into a scam in which a large group of Indian men gained entry to Ireland posing as a 'fake film crew' before fleeing to Britain. In a case similar to hit movie Argo, which stars Ben Affleck, as many as 26 Indian men obtained work visas under false pretences to enter Ireland

Sounds like it is almost normal.

Even though membership of the EU has absolutely no bearing on cases like this.

Indeed. I saw some Tory subgroup official Twitter account blaming the EU for the UK's VAT rate earlier today.

Offtopic, but the EU is responsible for member's vat codes, directives since the '70s

EU is not responsible for the VAT *rates* though. They are set by each member state.

True, regarding the structure of the VAT system, but the complaint was specifically about the UK's standard rate being raised from 17.5% to 20%, which is solely a UK decision.

Serious jail time by Irish standards, despite guilty pleas and clean priors.

No credit for cooperation and Garda rejected claims this was casual, pocket-money stuff. Seems the pair didn't give up any names, just "texts from Madrid".

I'd do a couple of years in the Joy rather than rat out the Triad. XX
