There's no way Middle-Ireland will accept a single gay man with an "active" social life as Taoiseach, despite the media's narrative of this suddenly becoming a magic rainbow land. If he had a long-term partner/spouse that people got used to first I could see it happening in 5 or 10 years-a majority of the public would even take them to heart.

Why the quotes around "active"? Is he entitled to a sex-life? I think you're far behind the curve with regard to attitudes in Ireland.

Couldn't agree with you more. I really doubt that would have a large part to play in the decision of the majority of voters, albeit I would think that outside Dublin it may be more so of a split, but I would still think it would be a minor "issue" when measured against his political capabilities.

Varadkar has really played down his sexuality.
His 'coming out' interview (necessary for the inevitable leadership push) was received without negativity.
Thankfully we don't have the same identity politics that the US left-leaning media seems to propagate.
I think after promoting Obama (1st Black) and Hillary (1st Female), they'd be all over Varadkar (1st Gay).

That being said, would a picture of him with a boyfriend prove a negative image ?

Of course that's the wrong reason to pick one but I know very little about the policies of either.

he used to have a severe speech impediment.

Not to say there's a genius lurking behind that - pretty sure there's not. His brother is a smart cookie though

It might have been just a phase he was going through?

Varadkar only because he will be good for Castleknock. The money will pour in as massively needed improvements are finally addressed.

Policies?
ffs, this is FG we're talking about. They don't have policies, any more than FF do. They're not supposed to have policies, beyond getting elected. That's not how Irish politics works.

You may laugh, but there are stretches of Castleknock that are dangerously under-gilded.

But Coles said you were a Fine Gaeler  And Fine Gaelers love Leo

Only for you, out of the current Dail who do you want as Taoiseach ?

I think the Sindo are going to make a headline out of this Thread on Sunday. "According to a private poll on a Fine Gael leaning property website 'We Want Leo !'"

I cant think of 1 I'd want.
3 yrs ago I'd have said Donnelly but his populism on mortgage arrears was a deal breaker. His joining FF was the stake through the heart!

I think the muti seat system destroys them all and turns them into glorified county councillors. Not 2 big national idea or policy between the lot of them.

Let's not forget Paschal Donohoe. I like the cut of his jib.

An idle thought... who was the last Taoiseach who didn't leave office in disgrace?

Coveney is a worker whereas Varadkar is a talker.

Don't know about that. Coveney is fond of the powerpoint presnetations and launches. Seems to be having 1 at least every 2 weeks but damn all action coming out of them
