It just occurred to me that FF might actually be the best and most competent government this island can produce and I felt an actual literal shiver down my spine.

Lets not be too quick to judge,

Quote:
Statement from George Lee TD.

I wish to announce that I have resigned from the Fine Gael Party and from my seat in Dáil Eireann today Monday 8th February 2010.

It has been a very difficult decision, but it is one that I have taken after a great deal of reflection on my position and on the role that I have been playing in Fine Gael since I
joined that Party in May last year.

The nine months since then have been a period of enormous economic upheaval. Throughout that period I have done my best to play a positive role in contributing to the national debate and to efforts to find a solution for many of the country’s economic problems.

The reality, however, is that despite my best efforts I have had virtually no influence or input into shaping Fine Gael’s economic policies at this most critical time.

The role I have been playing within the party has been very limited and I have found this to be personally unfulfilling.

When I entered politics last May I made it clear that I was doing so because I wanted to try to play a new role contributing to economic policy formulation. After nine months of trying within the political system it is now my considered view that the role available to me within Fine Gael is not a role I am happy to play.

I would like thank most sincerely all those who campaigned for me, for all of their efforts and support. I would also like to thank my Secretarial and Parliamentary Assistants for all of the help and work that they have provided to me.

I particularly want to thank the electorate of Dublin South who voted for me in such large numbers last May. It has been a great privilege and an honour to serve on their behalf. However, I do not believe I would be serving the electorate honestly if I were to continue allowing my efforts and mandate to be used to promote and market economic policies into which I have had no input.

George is fundamentally a nice guy. Perhaps he's learned fast that change will not come from the inside.
Its straight down the middle there is no ambiguity there.

Maybe this single event will teach the majority how the game has really worked up to this point and.
I can imagine George spent a lot of time doing this |O

Best news I've heard in a while to be honest.

It's a horrible thought, isn't it?

People didn't vote for FG, they voted for George Lee so it wouldn't exactly have been living a lie to keep the seat, as it stands unless George is playing the long game, then he should have used his position (and what a position it would have been) to have built something more.

If I had been one of his electorate, I would be fuming. You vote someone in to do a job not having them jump ship 9 months later because it's sort of harder than they expected.

A truly honest politican, and I'm saying that with a straight face about an Irish politican. Good man George and if this doesn't prompt FG to get get rid of Kenny then they are completely fucked as a party.

TBH I would be very happy knowing that my preferred choice had some integrity

Why not? They voted Enda Kenny as leader. How cutting edge and Braveheart was that? Have you forgotten his contract with the Irish people nonsense of a party political broadcast last time round?

The contract stuff was certainly nonsense but Enda Kenny as leader has not been a complete failure, he managed to unite the party and make substantial gains. The anecdote I would use is of a premier league manager who has brought the club as far as he can and its now time for somebody else to take over. Kenny has no ability to connect with people.

The fact that they were not hiring for a finance spokesperson obviously didn't help. This not just about political parties. When the new man arrived the incumbents marked their territory. Could happen anywhere.

There was a piece in the SBP there at the weekend which said one of his 3 press releases last month was about car clampers in his constituency.

I say it got to him a a bit alright!
