I know there is a separate thread on the musings of Isobel but I thought her contribution in the IT today was nothing short of miraculous

http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/pro ... 08788.html

She recounts a 30-minute journey in a taxi and the alleged musings of the cabbie. It's all very conspiratorial stuff really, and it might well have actually been said by a real cabbie in a real taxi where Isobel was a real passenger.

But isn't it just amazing that Isobel was able to quote verbatim the taxi driver so much. I mean did she record what he was saying and if she did, did she inform the man he was being recorded, or did she simultaneously write it down in shorthand. She certainly wouldn't have just made it up...

"because they knew we were a nation of homeowners and that if we got half a chance, we’d be like kids in a sweet shop, buying up all around us"

"So, they knew we’d be so embarrassed and guilty, that we’d be down on our bended knees, apologising and taking whatever punishment they doled out. Of course, they have Nama controlling things here on the ground; just to make sure that there’s no uprising.

At any little sign of trouble, they nab another one of the big boys, to remind the rest of us that we won’t get away with anything.

“They’ve people everywhere, infiltrating the place and quietly running the show."

Of course, they’re not well after all that drug-induced hypnosis: they don’t last, Bertie lost it and the poor Brians, God help them, and now Enda has the look of a man in a trance, he won’t last long either.

Not their fault really, they’re not well, none of them are themselves"

Jesus... the unseen people “calling the shots” .

... When it was Isobel and her kind drawn from right across the spectrum of middle class Ireland who were “calling the shots” , see what they did?

Perhaps they might have spared a thought then for the FTBers and other young aspiring homeowners who were unremittingly pressured by her and her kind and her editors to take out 35 year indenturships to pay for poky 2 up 2 down clone houses in the likes of Lucan and Leitrim. (while they lived the high life from the proceeds).

Isobel, it is the trouble YOU and you kind caused that necessitates the calling in of the "grey men and women; the unseen people".

Would you ever fuck off. If this is supposed to be satire, the joke is in the worst taste I've ever come across. If it is negative equity induced desperation and projection, you need to see a doctor. (In fact, you are one of the few people I'd be happy to see hauled off by "the grey men and women" in the white coats.)

She is terrifically entertaining though. I look forward to her increasingly mad ravings every Thursday! :P

sorry TE but I have to agree with pollydolly and namawinelake - I think Izzy is truly a miracle of this modern age. The total and complete absence of self-awareness is breath-taking to behold in action.

The satire works on so many levels. I'm no longer sure if I'm laughing at her or if she is laughing at me - its all so avante-garde. Brilliant! Author! Author! Encore! Encore!

Sorry, is anyone getting the point of the thread.

A journalist in a chance encounter during a 30-minute taxi cab ride is able to reel off sentences of direct quotations from the cab driver. Think about that for a second.

What I love about it is the 'Creative Writing 101' aspect of it. She no doubt consults a well-thumbed thesaurus, perched precariously on a tea-stained creaking writing desk, in penning her tinfoil-lined missive to the downtrodden nation.

Any chance of a gig at the IT eh?

Yeah, but you are preaching to the converted.

Edit: On reflection, my wifes memory for certain things I say is perfect.

I thought she would have been getting more stick for not taking public transport!

Was that her Hunter S. Thompson moment!
Pity he wasn't driving the taxi.

Personally, I don't find anything funny or terrific about her articles. You can follow her intent and expression of it from her early articles (eg. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=9325).

As NWL points out, it is fairly obvious that she made up a whole conversation with a taxi driver as a journalistic device to give credence to the kind of ideas and intents that float around her head. What kind of journalism is that? Why is it allowed? Isabel Morton is no Ross O'Carroll Kelly (Her earlier articles and history demonstrate this). That fact is the light under which her journalistic endeavours ought to be viewed. I can't get my head around the editorial decision to allow her to write what she does. It is practically criminal in the light of what has gone on in this country.
