This could also read that they have hired a net 250 people in the last year

Anecdotally lots of jobs losses not being reported some very large. Have you not noticed the central control of media and advertising for the last 3 years or more?

You need to get yourself a pair of these, 8)

Where I work, out of a team of nine, five are in the process of being made redundant! :(
I'm one of the "survivors", but I get the feeling that it's only a matter of time before my job goes.

Anyone else here think we will be seeing a lot more of this in the near future ?

Seems fairly obvious alright. The gun to the head option.

Although straying off thread, can't Peats just go into examinership, I thought that's what it was for so you could kick the leases to the curb, or were there harvey norman type "guarantees" put in place (ssssh ).

The Irish Property Bubble popping of 2006 continues to claim victims Peats being just one more and it is this event that really finished this business off. I do not believe that point has been understood or made clearly enough. Harvey Normans has a parent company not reliant on Irish only income so could really muscle out competitors by losing money and still trading on that reserve while the online retailers played the roll more of scavengers attracting the de-popped-populaiton away from Peats in their time of greatest cashflow need.

It's very clear now that no one had a real clue how bad it was going to get let alone what was actually going on not even those in the business who had seen a few downturns they did not react accordingly becasue they had no better information greater than the average person on the street as far as I am concerned. So many believed the illusion to their detriment.

I think another point worth making, is that, there are a lot more potential businesses that will fill a Peats sized hole in the retal market. The people renting very large premisses to Hardly Normal, will really struggle to replace them in 6-9 months, & that's a lot of rent to miss out on !

Its sad, but most of them will be for outsiders or graduates, I've spoke with the company few weeks ago on some job fair named something like "move to IT thousands of jobs awaiting.."
Telesales, helpdesk for 23k max with no chance for growth or 5+ years of experience in Databases and JAVA, XML, CSS and few others like in most offers now. So unless you are already in the business forget about it.
