I agree doubleglaze that it's time to move along and apologies for my part in veering slightly off course.

Though, to be fair, increasing vulnerability to discrimination and/ or perception of same by female workers of childbearing age is a bonafide sign of the Depression.
i.e. Employers are looking to get rid of people or save on staff costs (e.g. maternity leave/ cover) these days and it would seem inevitable that the 'weakest' will be targeted. I get the impression that women with a mind to having kids do feel fairly insecure these days and worry a lot about the effect on their employment prospects, especially if they're the sole or higher earner in a couple.

Anyway, moving on...

p.s. Thanks for the congrats Homemaker :)

Total number of cars under license down by 3.25% between 2008 and 2010

http://www.cso.ie/px/pxeirestat/Databas ... language=0

2497568 in 2008.
2416387 in 2010.
81181 difference between 2008 and 2010.

Since Ireland doesn't have much of a public transport system to speak of I think car ownership numbers are fairly sticky.
I expect 2011 to knock another 40 to 50000 cars off the road.
Figures for 2011 will not be available until November 2012.

I'm not sure which is worse. The bleating from landlords about falling rents being "bad" or de Indo rowing in behind them in support and treating this dogma as gospel, or that companies would deliberately expose themselves to a court sanctioned examinership and the attendant transparency required, to try to break out from oppressive leases.

Dunnes and SuperQuinn loosing market share to LIDL and ALDI.
It would not be a EURO for EURO transfer as LIDL/ALDI shopping basket may cost only 60 or 70% of a Dunnes/SuperQuinn shopping basket.

Ah, God be with the Tiger days and the €45 bottles of 'Bling' water in Superquinn. Their press release on it's launch back in the day is almost a parody in the style of Ross O'Carroll Kelly:
Quote:
Sheena Forde, Superquinn’s Purchasing Director says the ‘World of Waters’ range is designed to give discerning shoppers more choice than ever before when choosing a mineral or spring water. “Our extensive new range of waters has something to suit every taste, giving shoppers plenty of choice at every price point. We are delighted to be able to offer many of our waters exclusively in Ireland, for example the much talked about Bling H2O which will appeal to our luxury conscious shoppers, many of whom are purchasing the bottle as a fun addition to their dinner parties.”

"An extensive range of waters" for €45 per bottle in a country where it never stops raining. To use a well-worn cliche, you couldn't make it up.

I remember that one! I had to go and check the date, to make sure I wasn't seeing an April fool for the first time, a few month late.

Talk about selling sand to the Arabs, selling water to the Irish.

To follow on the water topic. We have to buy bottled water for the kids to wash their teeth and drink because the town supply at home is unsafe but I am out here in the middle of a desert and even the cold water supply in the hotel room is safe and drinkable. You buy bottled water as a cheap convienient supply to carry when you may not be near an on tap source. WTF is wrong with Ireland that we can't even provide our most abundant and basic thing cheaply and safely?

23% year on year growth now equates to "poor sales"?! Bear in mind also that there will be a lull as people wait for the new iPhone in the Autumn.

Counts as another sign of depression in my book. Thought it was ridiculously bad when Galway's supply was undrinkable for some time a couple of years back (must go down well with med device company management if they're over visiting...).

Whereabouts you?

It looks like Germany is back in recession.

Quote:
