Peter Sutherland is not Chairman of Goldman Sachs (GS).

Peter Sutherland is Chairman of Goldman Sachs Internal (GSI).

GSI is a vehicle GS set up before flotation when the US IRS was challenging its treatment of international revenues.

So keen were GS to ensure its new vehicle was genuine, it made the Board of GSI into full GS Partners.

Each one made $100-200m in the GS flotation for helping GS to shield non-US revenues from the US IRS (worth tens of billions to GS).

It is ironic the US IRS failed in its attempts here, given that without the US FED, GS would not exist.

(Software firms like Apple, Google, Facebook and Amazon have no reliance, and regularly give the US IRS the two fingers in this area).

Peter was happy to play his part in this noble venture and went on to even greater things after ..... Chairman of RBS.

And isn't it marvellous that UCD has an entire building and LAW SCHOOL named after him.

They also have buildings named after:

Denis O'Brien
Tony O'Reilly
Michael Smurfit
Lochlann Quinn

Don't get me started on the Confucius institute.

This country will really just whore itself out to anyone with money... God forbid we name some buildings after people who have actually achieved something beyond enriching themselves.

Not unique to Ireland nor a modern phenomenon - do you think Leyland Stanford, Eli Yale or Lord Nuffield were social workers?

Who on that Irish list founded a university?

I'm sure he's retiring so as to concentrate on donating some of his tens of millions worth of wealth to the Migrants drowning in the Med that he's so keen to push on the rest of us

Maybe just buying a membership.

Anytime I get jealous of his wealth I type his name into google images and think "not for all the money in the world".

Rich people contribute money to universities - in return they get their name on something. If they do it early enough they may even get their name on the whole place. Not a new story, nor one confined to UCD

Well there's always the Irish university named (partially) after the Queen.

The legal name of the corporate body that is Trinity College is:

The Provost, Fellows, Foundation Scholars and the other members of Board, of the College of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Queen Elizabeth near Dublin.

(At the time of its royal charter, "Dublin" meant Dublin Castle, so Trinity was "near Dublin". )
